Archaeology of the recent past in the North Atlantic: problems and potentials
Nú í vetur hefur Félag íslenskra fornleifafræðinga og Fornleifafræðingafélag Íslandsboðið upp á röð fyrirlestra sem eiga það sameiginlegt að falla undir svið nútímafornleifafræði (frá 19.-20. öld). Síðasti fyrirlesturinn í þessari röð verður haldinn núna á fimmtudag, 19. maí. Að þessu sinni mun dr. Gavin Lucas, dósent við Háskóla Íslands gefa yfirlit um rannsóknir á sviði nútímafornleifafræði á Norður-Atlandshafssvæðinu og setja íslenskar rannsóknir um efnið í stærra samhengi. Í kjölfarið verður boðið uppá umræður og m.a. stefnt að því að ræða framtíð slíkra rannsókna hérlendis, möguleika þeirra og takmarkanir, m.a. í lagaumhverfi sem kann að vera að breytast. Sem fyrr er fyrirlesturinn öllum opinn og ókeypis. Fyrirlesturinn verður fluttur á ensku og að neðan er að finna stutta samantekt um efni hans.
Archaeology of the recent past in the North Atlantic: problems and potentials
The talk will give a brief overview of the state of later historical archaeology in the North Atlantic, looking at what research has been conducted in Norway, Shetlands, Faroes, Greenland and Atlantic Canada, comparing it to the state of research in Iceland. Some general themes will be drawn out as, in particular it will be argued that research in this area can be used to contest and re-think some of the dominant tropes which have dictated the archaeology of the modern period, specifically, modernity itself. The presentation will aim to be brief, giving more time for discussion and the chance to reflect generally on the problems and potential of later historical archaeology in Iceland.
